Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

I’m over 18 and would like to have the HPV immunisation. Can I get it done by my GP?

Young women born after 1 September 1990 are eligible to receive the HPV vaccine as part of a one-off catch-up programme. There is no current plan to offer the vaccine to all women aged 18 and over as part of a national programme. This decision was based on advice given by independent experts who carried out a careful review of the evidence. Young women who are older than the catch-up age groups (born before 1 Sept 1990) will continue to be invited to be screened as part of our highly successful national cervical screening programme (women are invited to be screened from the age of 20). If you believe that the HPV vaccine (Cervarix® or Gardasil®) could be beneficial to you, or to your daughter, you can seek advice from your GP.
